Ida, a Category 2 hurricane with winds as high as 105 mph on Sunday night, is moving north toward the U.S. Gulf Coast, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The hurricane is expected to weaken to a Category 1 hurricane on Monday and make landfall on Tuesday morning, the NHC said.

On Sunday night, the NHC forecasted that Ida would make landfall in or around Alabama. A hurricane watch is in effect from the southeast Louisiana coast to the Florida Panhandle.

Before entering the Gulf of Mexico, Ida drenched Central America as a tropical depression on Friday. Ida packed 75 mph winds when it hit the central Nicaraguan coast Thursday, but lost force as it slogged inland.

In Nicaragua, Ida smashed scores of flimsy dwellings, toppled wooden church steeples and forced thousands to evacuate their homes in sparsely populated eastern Nicaragua. Bridges, schools and electrical transmission towers were damaged, but no deaths were reported.

In El Salvador, at least 91 people died and 60 are missing following floods and mudslides, the government said on Sunday.

The storm reportedly brushed past Cancun on Sunday but caused little damage to the Mexican resort city.
